Africa – A multifaceted continent. And our activities there are equally multifaceted. Starting with our joint efforts with WHO to eliminate the insidious tropical disease schistosomiasis joint efforts and information events for healthcare professionals up to the establishment of business offices to get closer to our customers.
Now we have donated the 500 millionth praziquantel tablet. In 2007, we committed ourselves to providing this drug until schistosomiasis
, which kills hundreds of thousands of people every year, has been eliminated. More than 100 million people, primarily school children, have already been treated in a total of 35 African countries.
To further strengthen our presence in Africa, we meanwhile have offices in Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Tunisia, and South Africa - and recently opened one in Ivory Coast as well. On the occasion of the opening, we donated two Minilabs
– compact laboratories the size of a suitcase – in order to support the local health authorities in the fight against counterfeit medicines. And we are also helping this country to fight schistosomiasis by supplying 3.6 million praziquantel tablets in 2016 and 6.5 million in 2017.
With our Luminary event series, we offer medical professionals in Africa the opportunity to exchange information tn on major disease as well as on ways to detect and prevent them. This year's Luminary event is taking place in Ivory Coast. The focus of the two-day congress was on improving disease management, early detection und prevention.
500 MILLION PRAZIQUANTEL TABLETS
Since 2007, our company has donated 500 million praziquantel tablets to fight the insidious tropical disease schistosomiasis. In the meantime, we donate up to 250 million tablets annually to WHO.
IVORY COAST: OFFICE OPENING
We opened an office in Ivory Coast on October 17, 2016. This new office will allow us to reinforce and to develop our already existing activities in the country and it will be the hub for our operations in French-speaking Central and Wet African countries. On the occasion of the opening we also donated two minilabs with the aim of supporting Ivory Coast in it’s fight against counterfeit medicines. The minilabs, which help to detect counterfeits, are manufactured by the Global Pharma Health Fund (GPHF), a charitable initiative financed by our company.
