Resource efficiency

We are committed to conserving natural resources and using them efficiently. This approach is an integral part of our efforts to mitigate our impact on the environment. Take for instance our recycling of used chemicals, which reduces both consumption as well as subsequent waste.
Solvents – recycled
Solvents – recycled
We are constantly working to optimize our chemical processes in an effort to reduce waste. This is why we're now treating solvents and reusing them. Take for instance our heptane recycling initiative. Heptane is utilized as a solvent to separate mixtures, a process necessary for the purification of liquid crystals.
We collect the used heptane and have an external recycling company treat it, purifying the heptane so that we can reuse it in our processes. By doing so, we can recycle more than 85% of the heptane, thereby cutting our annual consumption by 1,900 metric tons. This also reduces our waste and significantly improves the carbon footprint of the process.

Award for responsible conduct
Award for responsible conduct
We apply our own high environmental standards to our sites outside of Germany while also consistently meeting local statutory regulations. Our plant in Suzhou, China has set a particularly excellent example of responsible conduct. They use a vacuum distillation process to recycle used solvents, which considerably cuts down on waste. We are thus adhering strictly to both our own internal hazmat regulations as well as to local statutes.
In 2015, our efforts were officially honored when the Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM) presented our Chinese subsidiary with the Responsible Care Chairman Award. This prize recognizes the shining example we have set for responsible conduct, as well as our efforts to promote sustainable growth in the chemical industry.
