Energy from nutshells and wood chips

We work to conserve energy and reduce energy-related emissions – and have a creative approach to doing so! Take for instance our site in Goa, India, where we buy the shells of regionally grown cashews and coconuts left over after harvest and use them to fuel our biomass power plant.

Harnessing the power of the sun

One of the ways we generate energy is to tap into the power of the sun. Our photovoltaic plants significantly cut down our CO2 emissions at various sites in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

Award for responsible conduct

Setting the example in responsible conduct: our subsidiary in China has won an award for the recycling system at its Suzhou, China site, which enables solvents to be reused and thus reduces waste considerably.

Energy management to reduce carbon emissions

Efficient energy management: We're cutting down our carbon emissions by roughly 9,500 metric tons per year courtesy of two modern energy stations in Darmstadt and a co-generation plant in Gernsheim.

Respecting the environment

Climate protection and resource scarcity are key challenges facing society in the 21st century. For us, taking responsibility is an integral part of our culture. Backed by our certified environmental management system, we work to minimize our emissions and waste while also utilizing resources such as energy, water and raw materials as efficiently as possible.
In 2009, we launched a comprehensive climate impact mitigation program called EDISON. We've set the goal of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020, relative to the 2006 baseline. Worldwide, 20 Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, sites jointly account for 80% of our greenhouse gas emissions, so EDISON is focusing on these sites in particular. Since 2012, we've initiated or implemented more than 400 measures Group-wide, roughly 60% of the projects planned under EDISON. Through these efforts, we're aiming to cut CO2 emissions by about 90,000 metric tons per year in the medium term.
Under the Carbon Disclosure Project, we’ve been reporting our activities to mitigate our impact on the environment for several years now. These reports provide our stakeholders with detailed information on how we’re working to conserve resources and respect the environment.
